about

This song was the inspiration for the video created by Chris Gunn of ShotByGunn Productions. It was written a few days before New Year's Eve just as the Great Recession was beginning to take its toll. An old Elvis Costello song kept playing in my head as I walked the streets of Flagstaff. Much of the song was written while I was eating breakfast in the old MartAnne's on San Francisco Street.

lyrics

I followed the wind
as it blew me along San Francisco Street
Somebody said the Orpheum was going to close
I was there with the crazies and the rockers
the night that Woodstock opened
Where those days went, no one knows

Stopped into MartAnne’s
Enchilada breakfast and coffee
Always does wonders for my mood
Jokin’ with the locals about the crumbling economy
Someone said, “Be grateful we still got money for food.”

While they speculated if the future looked gloomy or bright
I was thinking about how good you were looking the other night

And I found myself singing
that old Elvis Costello Song
It can’t be wrong
to feel the way I do
No I just can’t keep myself from loving you

Thumbing through the pages of Flag Live
You won’t find my words there anymore
Guess I cut a little too close to the bone
Anne says that Flag Brew
Is where she’s going New Years Eve
She says Gravy’s playing – she won’t be alone

I thought about you out on the town
And who you might be kissing when the big pine cone comes down

Then I found myself singing
that old Elvis Costello Song
It can’t be wrong
to feel the way I do
No I just can’t keep myself from loving you

We don’t travel in the same social circles
I almost never see you out there on the street
You’re not likely to drop in anywhere I’m playing
But in my head I keep hearing that old melody repeat

Holding on with hope
and faith in second chances
The night was falling snow was coming down
So I stepped into the Rendezvous
Just to get myself out of the cold
And that bitter wind that rips right through this town

As I was thinking I can’t do this anymore
Saw your smile as I came walkin’ in that door

And I found myself singing
that old Elvis Costello Song
It can’t be wrong
to feel the way I do
No I just can’t keep myself from loving you

Continued to write. The songs got better. I still play locally in Flagstaff (and Santa Cruz when I lived there). I write about people and places I've loved, and the lessons learned along the way. ... more
